Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does the dual-zone system work?

Each zone has its own temperature control and its own fan-forced circulation, adjustable independently across a wide range 36–72°F per zone on Whynter combo units. Setting one zone does not affect the other, so you can hold the wine and beverage in different temperature at the same time.

2. What temperature should I set each zone to?

Suggested beverage zone: 36–40°F keeps soda, sparkling water, and light beers ice-cold. For the wine zone: 55°F is the classic cellar temperature for mixed storage; for serving, whites are best in the mid-40s to low 50s°F and reds in the mid-50s to low 60s°F.

3. Can I switched the wine and beverage?

Yes, the difference is shelving: the wine zone’s contoured shelves cradle bottles, while the beverage zone’s flat shelves stack cans efficiently. Match the shelf to store and display your drinks and collections.

4. Do the shelves come out?

Yes. Whynter combo refrigerators use removable, adjustable shelving in both zones — contoured shelves in the wine zone and tempered glass or flat shelves in the beverage zone. Lift a shelf out to fit larger magnums, 2-liter bottles, or upright wine; move one up a notch for taller beverage cans.

5. Why do combo refrigerators use side-by-side French doors?

Each zone keeps its own door in it own seal and have greater temperature control. Whynter combo units has its own lock on each side. However, the doors are hinged at the outer edges and cannot be reversed.

6. Can I use a built-in beverage fridge as freestanding — or a freestanding model as built-in?

A built-in unit runs fine freestanding because it vents from the front; just leave a few inches of clearance for convenience. A freestanding unit should never be enclosed, if rear-vented heat gets trapped, forcing the compressor to overwork, reducing cooling performance and potentially shortening the life of the unit.

7. How is capacity measured — and will larger bottles or cans fit?

Rated capacity assumes standard containers: 12 oz. cans for beverage and 750 ml Bordeaux-style bottles in the wine zone. Wider Champagne, Burgundy, or Pinot Noir bottles, 16 oz. cans, and specialty bottles take more room and lower the actual count. Reposition shelves for oversized containers.

8. Will a combo refrigerator fit a standard cabinet opening?

Whynter’s combo refrigerators are built to the standard 24-inch undercounter width and stand roughly 34 inches tall. The minimum opening requirement for this unit is 23.65"W x 22.65"D x 34.25"H. Check the user manual for details.

9. How much clearance does a beverage fridge need for ventilation?

Built-in models need only a clear front grille — keep it free of dust and don’t block it with baseboards or trim. Freestanding models need at least 4–6 inches of open space at the back and sides so the compressor can shed heat. Exact clearances for each model are listed in its user manual.

10. Can I place it in the garage?

Only if the garage stays within the unit’s rated ambient range 50–90°F. A climate-controlled garage works; otherwise choose an indoor spot. In a hot garage, the compressor might struggles to hold two zones at temperature and in an unheated winter garage, the thermostat may stop cycling properly.

11. How much electricity does a beverage fridge use?

A typical compressor fridge draws roughly 85–140 watts while cooling and cycles on and off, working out to around 1 kWh per day; a few dollars per month at average U.S. electricity rates. Actual use depends on cabinet size, setpoint, room temperature, and how often the door is opened.

12. How loud is it?

Whynter beverage refrigerators run quietly, under about 40 dB, comparable to a library or soft conversation. You’ll hear a low hum when the compressor cycles on and an occasional gurgle as refrigerant moves; both are normal. Persistent buzzing or rattling usually means the unit isn’t level or is touching a wall or cabinet.

13. What is a wine and beverage combo refrigerator?

A wine and beverage combo refrigerator puts two coolers in one cabinet: one zone shelved for cans and bottled drinks, and one zone with contoured shelving for wine bottles. Each zone has its own independent temperature control. it could save space and energy compare to having 2 separated units.

14. How long does it take to cool down after first plugging it in?

After delivery, let the unit stand upright and unplugged for at least 2 hours (24 hours if it was transported on its side) so the compressor oil settles. Once running, an empty cabinet typically reaches its setpoint within a few hours; a full load of room-temperature cans can take overnight to chill completely.

15. What does the activated carbon filter do, and how often should I replace it?

The activated carbon filter scrubs odors from the air inside the cabinet, useful in a glass-door unit that’s opened often. Replace the filter about every six months for best results. Replacement filters and part details are available through Whynter product support.

16. What should I check if one zone isn’t cooling — or there’s condensation inside?

Light condensation on glass doors in humid rooms is normal; wipe it dry and confirm both doors seal fully. If a zone runs warm, work through this checklist before calling support:

  • Confirm power and check that the zone’s setpoint wasn’t changed — after first startup or a power loss, allow up to 24 hours for both zones to stabilize.
  • Make sure the front grille is unobstructed and vacuum off any dust.
  • Check that the unit is level and each door gasket seals evenly with no gaps.
  • Listen for the circulation fan in the warm zone; airflow should be audible when the compressor runs.

Still warm? Contact Whynter via live chat or the contact page with your model and serial number.

17. What warranty comes with Whynter beverage refrigerators?

Whynter beverage refrigerators include a one-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. Register your product and find full terms on the warranty information page. User manuals are posted on each product page.

Factors to Consider a Wine Cooler

A wine cooler fridge is essential for keeping your favorite bottles at the perfect temperature for both serving and long-term storage. A built-in wine refrigerator will seamlessly complement your other home appliances while expanding your storage capacity. Whether you need a small wine fridge to fit in your kitchen island or a larger design for your bar nook, consider a dual-zone cooling system that can store both red and white wines at their ideal temperatures.

Storage Capacity

Start by thinking about how many bottles you plan to store. Our selection includes compact models for a few cherished bottles and large-capacity units that hold up to 160 bottles—ideal for serious collectors or casual enthusiasts.

Bottle Size and Shape

When we refer to bottle capacity for our wine and beverage coolers, we mean the maximum number of standard 750ml Bordeaux-style bottles that can fit inside the unit. If your collection includes bottles that differ from the traditional Bordeaux-style shape or size, the actual capacity may be lower than the advertised capacity.

Freestanding vs. Built-In

Freestanding fridges offer flexibility in placement—from your kitchen to a home bar, wine cellar, or even in a closet and they usually require side clearance. Built-in models are designed to fit under counters or in cabinet for a seamless look with front venting. Whichever you choose, always double-check the dimensions to ensure a perfect fit in your space.

Temperature Control

Temperature control is crucial for long-term wine storage. Ensure optimal temperature storage for
your entire wine collection with our versatile, high-quality wine fridges.

Cooling System

Compressors are more common and tend to achieve lower temperatures but they generate more noise and heat. Thermoelectric systems run quieter, produce no vibrations and do not use chemicals.

Dimensions

Don’t overlook size. Carefully measure the intended location for your wine fridge, accounting for width, height, and ventilation clearance. A well-fitted unit not only performs better but also looks more integrated into your space.
