Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I plug 2 units into 1 double plug wall outlet?

Caution - this is an educated layperson's opinion.... best thing to do is consult an electrician

A normal 15 Amp circuit (circuit with a 15 Amp breaker) has a normal operating maximum of 80%. 80% of 15 Amps is 12 Amps, so the whole circuit should never be loaded with more than 12 Amps. Each of these draw 2 Amps max. Two would draw 4 Amps. 4 Amps is only 1/3 the max for a normal circuit. Sometimes in-rush current for the start of a compressors spikes to higher than rated current, particularly if there were no other things on this circuit, it will be fine.
So - to make a long story short - yes you can if the rest of the circuit does not ever create an overload, or this circuit only has this one duplex outlet. Now the rub. the National Electric Code (NEC) requires all kitchen refrigerators or freezers to be on dedicated circuits, but this is for full sized kitchen appliances. in fact, if it is in a kitchen , the circuit should be a 20 Amp circuit with 12 ga wire and a 20 Amp breaker.

2. After delivery, how long should you wait before plugging into electrical outlet?

Before connecting the appliance to the power source, let it stand upright for approximately 4 hours. This will reduce the possibility of a malfunction in the cooling system caused by handling during transportation.

3. Can this wine cooler be installed as a built-in unit or used freestanding?

Yes, it is designed for both built-in and freestanding installation. For built-in installation, allow at least ¼ inch of clearance on each side and at the top. The minimum cabinet opening dimensions are 24 inches wide, 70 inches high, and 27 inches deep, with an additional 2 inches of depth for the handle.

4. Can I set different temperatures for the upper and lower zones?

Yes, it features two independently controlled temperature zones, allowing you to store different types of wine at their preferred temperatures. Both the upper and lower zones can be adjusted from 40°F to 65°F (5°C to 18°C), and the temperature display can be switched between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

5. Will this wine cooler hold 164 bottles of any size?

The advertised capacity of 164 bottles is based on standard 750ml Bordeaux-style wine bottles. Actual capacity may vary depending on the size and shape of your bottles. Larger bottles may require additional space between shelves or the removal of certain shelves, which can reduce the total storage capacity.

6. Can I remove the shelves to accommodate larger wine bottles?

Yes, it comes with removable wooden shelves, allowing you to adjust the storage arrangement to accommodate different bottle sizes. Before removing a shelf, take all bottles off it and open the door fully to avoid damaging the door gasket. Do not pull out multiple loaded shelves at the same time.

7. Is this wine refrigerator noisy?

It has a noise rating of less than 39 dB. As a compressor-based wine refrigerator, it may produce normal operating sounds such as humming from the compressor, airflow from the fans, gurgling from circulating refrigerant, and occasional popping sounds caused by temperature changes. Proper leveling and installation can help minimize unnecessary noise.

8. Does this wine cooler require manual defrosting?

It features an automatic defrost system that normally removes frost during its operating cycle. However, frost may accumulate when the door is opened frequently or the unit operates in a hot or humid environment. If the frost does not clear within 24 hours, the manufacturer's manual indicates that manual defrosting may be necessary.

9. How often should I replace the charcoal filter?

The activated charcoal filter should be replaced once a year. It helps reduce odors and airborne contaminants entering the wine cabinet, helping maintain a suitable storage environment for your wine. For replacement-filter purchasing information, contact Whynter customer support.

10. Can I reverse the door opening direction?

Yes, it has a reversible door, allowing you to change the opening direction to better suit your space. Reversing the door involves adjusting the hinge components, so follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully or contact a qualified technician if you are unsure how to perform the procedure.

11. Can I install this wine cooler outdoors?

No. The Whynter BWR-1642DZ is intended for indoor use and is not designed for outdoor installation. Place the unit in a suitable indoor environment away from excessive heat and moisture to help maintain consistent cooling performance.

12. What should I do if the wine cooler does not start immediately after power interruption?

If the appliance has been unplugged, experienced a power interruption, wait 3–5 minutes before attempting to restart it. This delay allows the compressor system to settle. Attempting to restart the appliance too quickly may prevent it from starting immediately.

Factors to Consider a Wine Cooler

A wine cooler fridge is essential for keeping your favorite bottles at the perfect temperature for both serving and long-term storage. A built-in wine refrigerator will seamlessly complement your other home appliances while expanding your storage capacity. Whether you need a small wine fridge to fit in your kitchen island or a larger design for your bar nook, consider a dual-zone cooling system that can store both red and white wines at their ideal temperatures.

Storage Capacity

Start by thinking about how many bottles you plan to store. Our selection includes compact models for a few cherished bottles and large-capacity units that hold up to 160 bottles—ideal for serious collectors or casual enthusiasts.

Bottle Size and Shape

When we refer to bottle capacity for our wine and beverage coolers, we mean the maximum number of standard 750ml Bordeaux-style bottles that can fit inside the unit. If your collection includes bottles that differ from the traditional Bordeaux-style shape or size, the actual capacity may be lower than the advertised capacity.

Freestanding vs. Built-In

Freestanding fridges offer flexibility in placement—from your kitchen to a home bar, wine cellar, or even in a closet and they usually require side clearance. Built-in models are designed to fit under counters or in cabinet for a seamless look with front venting. Whichever you choose, always double-check the dimensions to ensure a perfect fit in your space.

Temperature Control

Temperature control is crucial for long-term wine storage. Ensure optimal temperature storage for
your entire wine collection with our versatile, high-quality wine fridges.

Cooling System

Compressors are more common and tend to achieve lower temperatures but they generate more noise and heat. Thermoelectric systems run quieter, produce no vibrations and do not use chemicals.

Dimensions

Don’t overlook size. Carefully measure the intended location for your wine fridge, accounting for width, height, and ventilation clearance. A well-fitted unit not only performs better but also looks more integrated into your space.
